Mercury Marine Outboard
Mercury Marine Outboard

30 years ago American manufacturers dominated the market.Names outboard motor as Mercury, Johnson, Evinrude and Chrysler led the field to compete with each other produce outboard engines bigger and better. However, while this was happening were neglecting the smallest of outboard motors. They are the engines outboard motors sold in greater numbers and are often outboards First, many of us buy. This is the case for many of us join the same brand (brand loyalty) because we buy bigger outboard motors in other recent years. The Japanese have done and what gradually, Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki and Tohatsu concentrate in small began to take over as market leaders. I got the field improving the efficiency and reliability. Just as adding features outboard of these previously only in small large engines.

Having achieved success in the market for small powerboats, these Japanese manufacturers rose to the rank of power. They again came to dominate the market for outboard engines up to at least 20 horsepower. Manufacturers Americans rather than to compete with the Japanese gave up and decided to buy these engines from the Japanese and the plate as their own. Now, the Chinese entered the market. Making essentially what the Japanese already done by copying the best features of today's engines while limiting costs.

So we will compare the outboard motors that are available for those seeking an outboard motor for his boat. If we take a boat big enough to say, a Pioneer 12 so that each outboard must carry a heavy weight in water. If, after the outboard motor follows:

2.5hp Mercury, Mercury 3.5HP; 2.5hp Mariner 3.5HP Tohatsu, Yamaha 2.5hp, 2.5hp Suzuki, Honda 2.3hp, 2.6HP and Parsun. These outboard motors 4 stroke. This is due to a directive to prevent 2 strokes sold to EU These outboard motors provide a fairly wide range of engines available on the market for power boats.

Judging engine cons of the various other tests were completed. Tire Evidence demonstrates that Mercury and 3.5HP Tohatsu 3.5HP were the 90 most powerful pounds of thrust (these two engines, with Mariner are virtually identical). The least effective is the Honda 2.3hp to 66 pounds of thrust. Amid Suzuki 2.5hp to 83 pounds of thrust, the Yamaha 2.5hp to 78 pounds of thrust and Parsun 2.6HP to 70 pounds thrust.

Next test was the fuel consumption. At full speed - 5.75 knots, the better the outboard motor 2.5hp and 2.5hp Yamaha Suzuki for at least 20%. The worst was the Parsun 2.6HP. When the throttles were eased and the boat was traveling on a comparison of fuel consumption was less obvious, only 10% difference. All these figures are for 4 race engines. However, based on data already recorded for the 2 time similar circumstances, the main engines were up 50% less fuel efficient speed. Very thirsty! Remember 2 outboard stroke brain are still available used.

Then, the weight of each outboard motor compared. Four stroke engines are heavier than the old 2 stroke because the head of power, etc. The Mercury, Mariner, Tohatsu, Yamaha and all Parsun weighing about. 38 to 41 lb (18 kg.). However, 2.3hp Honda and Suzuki 2.5HP weighed much less 28 pounds (12.5 kg.).

The price of each outboard motor was compared. It was difficult to be precise as discounts and offers of sale are always changing.

Mercury 3.5HP Â £ 449
Mercury 2.5hp  £ 380
Mariner 2.5hp  £ 429
Tohatsu 3.5HP Â £ 449
 £ 489 Yamaha 2.5hp
Suzuki 2.5hp  £ 379
Honda 2.3hp  £ 429
Parsun 2.6HP Â £ 375

Although Parsun was the least expensive and is practically identical with the same engine as the Yamaha 2.5hp, not very good. It's like I follow Gordon Ramsay recipe the letter, but when compared side by side, just know that its going to be much better. The Chinese are able to copy, like the Japanese before them, but we did well, again!

Finally, a little overboard each test. The Mercury Mariner and Tohatsu engines are the same. From the parameters of throttle are easy to understand with the start and the stop button clearly identified. Gasoline on / off valve is not as clearly marked. All engines are gearing. Neutral to come, then using the rotation of 360 degrees of thrust can be obtained from the rear. There are 4 recline positions and ability in shallow water. The levels of oil can be easily verified by observing the indicator on the side of the engine cover.

The Yamaha 2.5hp easier to understand the development of start and stop, but the gauge oil level was out of sight under the crankcase cover. As for Mercury outboard 2.5hp Yamaha gears, forward and neutral with a rotation of 360 degrees. Unlike mercury, which has a cross pin, Yamaha has a rubber core in the propeller, so that no pin cut to break.

The Suzuki 2.5hp is as above, but with oil measure easily visible on the side of the bridge. The propeller has a pin cut Spare parts filed under the hood.

The Honda 2.3hp Water Cooled not like all the outboard motors of other evidence. It is by air and no gears. Instead, it uses a centrifugal clutch. This makes starting and maneuvering more difficult than others. It just takes a little practice. The oil meter is out of sight under the bridge. The propeller has a pin cut spare parts stored in the bonnet.

Finally, the Parsun 2.6HP, a copy of Yamaha 2.5hp but not very good. However, it is the least expensive engine in mint condition. Fuel consumption is a major drawback.

Ian McCulloch has been sailing and boating almost all of his life. For the past 35 years he has been building boats of all types. At present he builds fibreglass dinghies. Ian has several websites, one which concentrates on outboard motors - http://www.sailorpower.co.uk

How can I tell what year is Mercury outboard 115 hp?

It is in 1984, in line six.
