The proper way to ‘grab’ a Bass is: as you are taking it off the hook, you want to put your thumb in its mouth and your fingers under its’ ‘chin’ and this will allow you to hold it up so you can retrieve your lure, whatever and also take a picture if you like. It also slightly paralyzes the fish so it won’t jump off but remember to reareate it a little back and forth when you sportsmanlike let it go for another catch another day. That is, put your hand with the fish down in the water and move it gently back and forth so it can re-fill its gills. Makes for a smoother re-entry.
As far as a catfish, it really depends on the size. A lot of people just man handle it, most just pick it up by the gills but you do have to be mindful of that little fin you spoke of. It doesn’t really matter what size, they all can be quite feisty and that is why they are so bull-headed in the fight up. But they sure are good eatin’!
Most bass you can grab and hold by the lower jaw, I say most because some bass (like the striped bass) can get big… 40 – 50 pounds. That’s a lot of fish to be holding by the jaw when it’s wiggling around. The catfish really depends on the size of the fish itself. You can grab the small ones under the belly and slide your fingers between the fins, they are usually pretty calm when I hold them in this manner. However, if you plan to fish for these fish a lot, you may want to get a boga grip. This device grips the fish by the lower jaw and allows you to safely unhook the fish. Good luck and I hope you catch a bunch!
The bass is simple, thumb in the mouth and index finger bent below the mouth forcing the mouth open.
Now the catfish is a bit trickier. You don’t want to gorilla fist it because you will probably end up with a spike in your hand… or foot if you are one of those that step on it.
Just hold the fish up by the string and gently move your hand down it’s body. Once you get to the spikes bring your thumb under one spike. With your hand across it’s chest place your middle finger under the spike on the other side while your index finger clamps down from the top. Now you can do with it as you please.
lip them by grabbing them by their mouths
