Weight Capacity of a Boat?
Adam S asked:
I bought a small boat designed for ponds that weighs 130 pounds. It's weight capacity is 475 pounds. It will mostly be just me fishing on it which wont be an issue because I weigh around 180. However, I would like to go on it with my dad and together we will be pushing that weight capacity. Also, I got a 15 pound anchor. I don't know how much a trolling motor and its battery weighs. Plus we fish for bass and catfish a lot, both of which can be pretty hefty when big.

So I was wondering what the weight capacity of a boat is. Is that when it will sink? Or is it when it just becomes immobile? Also, how conservative are the weight capacity estimates?
So, I guess my real question here is: Can my dad and I go fishing on this boat?

weight capacity is 475 pounds most likely wil hold more before sinking most canoe’s can hold that much
You will be fine- You should never go away over the weight capacity by 100’s of pounds though – The more weight the lower the boat sits in the water which can be a concern in rough water Also the boat top end speed will be slower with more weight- Try to distribute weight evenly as possible- one person in front and 1 driving
Give it a go and see what happens, as long as you don’t mind getting a bit wet!
As long as you wear a life jacket or PFD and have some way of recovering the boat if it sinks, what’s the worst that can happen?
But if you do want to work it all out in theory, some points to note… If that’s the displacement of the boat, you have to include the weight of the boat itself, but if it’s the payload you can leave that out and probably the engine and anchor too, especially if they’re factory-fitted.
They are conservative.
However, as that freeboard shrinks the boat will lose stability and you will have to be careful.
Don’t push too close, and put on your jackets.
weight capacity is usually conservative, but the design is also important.
you will need to be careful where the weight (people) are placed in the boat to keep it level in the water.
as example if the boat has a narrow stern then most of the weight needs to amidships. the heaver person may need to sit in the middle with the lighter person near the stern. it may even make a difference if the person in the middle sits facing forward.
remember to wear your life jackets and test your capacity in calm water.
hope this helps
