Saltwater Fishing?

7
flucolax35 asked:

I am going fishing in Cape Charles on Virginia's Eastern Shore. I plan to fish the whole time (from dock mostly but maybe by boat). I fish freshwater all the time for bass so I was wondering if I could use those plastics in saltwater with sucess. Any other suggestions for lures? I'm going to be fishing for mainly croakers and flounder I think. Plus anything else that is in the bay.

you should really get some specific stuff for the bay the baits for flounder or fluke are a little bit bigger try to get a jig about 2 to 4 oz. if just in the bay get a package of those berckley gulp minnows with the oil package. put a little stinger hook up about 12 inches and you will be wishing you could trade that fresh water rod in and move to the beach.

well if you can catch some croaker, you will have great bait to use for bigger fish. i love to fish for redfish. they hang out in the channel pretty close to shore. if you can get a hold of some fingerling size croaker, and fish them off the bottom with a one ounce egg sinker, on j hook, 20 lb test line, you can tear em up. real fun fish to catch if you don’t want to go too far out in your boat.

if you fish for flounder i would fish on bot om with a buck tail jig with squid strips for a trailer or just use cut bait on the bot om i use mackerel cut in big peaces

Down here, a good bit further south than you, we use live minnows or finger mullet for flounder, fished on a leader of floro-carbon with an oz. or 2 bullet wieght above the leader and fish it slow, similar to a carolina rigged worm (the rig is similar too). Croakers are caught on dead shrimp fished just off the bottom. The only reason I fish for croakers is to use them for bait though.

If you can find the artificial bait, Gulp, you should be able to catch just about anything in the area. This bait has a smell/flavor built right in. I use it on the Texas Coast and put it under a popping cork instead of live shrimp and do very good. It is tougher than live bait and works just as good in my opinion.

The artificial you have will probably work but may not produce the results you want.

Good Luck and Tight Lines,

I would use bloodworm or squid for croaker and for flounder use minnows or cut fish for bait.
