How old of a vehicle do you think we are looking at, and how many miles do you think we should expect to be on it? We're pretty open to all makes of SUV-type vehicles but are not interested in a pickup. I'd appreciate any input or ideas - thanks!

I would recommend and older Jeep Cherokee. They are able to pull heavy equipment, have a comfy ride, have a nice audio system in them and some are very luxurious. You should look at a 96 or 97. These should have no more than 110,000 on them. This vehicle would be perfect for what you want it for. As I said, they are safe, affordable and have a lot of power and pickup. This comes from experience of owning one of these fine machines. I hope this helped.
Would highly reccomend the Jeep Grand Cherokee. A little bigger than the regular Cherokee, with a bigger engine also – optional V8 instead of V6. I would agree, a ‘95 to ‘98 is what you’ll be looking at, with around 100,000 miles. Be sure to get the 4WD option!
I would go with an Explorer 4X4. If you could find one, I also liked the IH Scout II with a 345 V-8.
